Perfectly Safe

I was perfectly safe from all the world's harms,
With my walls of defense to save me from the pain
that could possibly come from being held in your arms.

Living behind shields that deflected your charms:
charms that could bruise me. My defenses didn't wane,
And I kept myself safe from your love's harms.

I never needed to notice those alarms,
(that signaled emotions beginning to strain
at the mere thought of being held in your arms)

No need to notice since my feelings, when beginning to warm,
Could be trapped behind my walls, neatly contained.
I could still stay safe from love's unknown harms.

But just as my heart, skipping beats, did warn,
A glance from your laughing eyes just made me insane,
And I craved, I longed to be held in your arms.

My walls, my defenses went tumbling. (Darn!)
Scattered in broken shards, my safety was lain,
But I don't need to be so perfectly safe from all harms...
That is... as long as I can wake up to be held in your arms.
